R300Heritage Celebration: Honoring the Legacy of Imithente and Izingane Zoma
This special event celebrates South Africa’s rich cultural heritage through the vibrant sounds of Maskandi, a genre that has long been a cornerstone of Zulu music tradition. The evening will spotlight two of the most influential female groups in Maskandi history: Imithente and Izingane Zoma.
.
Imithente, founded in 1989 by Simosakha Muntungiyeke Mthalane and his wife Dumisile Manana, rose to prominence when female Maskandi was gaining popularity. Originating from KwaZulu-Natal, the group consists of three dynamic women: Dumisile Manana Mthalane, Buselaphi Buthelezi Gxowa, and Nokwazi Ntuli. Their debut album, Um’bulali, was released in 1995, followed by a string of successful albums that solidified their status as Maskandi royalty. Notably, their 2001 album Isidikiselo earned them widespread acclaim, achieving gold status within a month.
Izingane Zoma, another trailblazing group from KwaZulu-Natal, has been a powerful force in the Maskandi genre for over two decades. Led by Thandoluni Phungula, Bongekile Ngobese, and Xoli Buthelezi, the group is renowned for its vibrant performances and socially conscious lyrics. Their music, which often touches on significant historical and political themes, has earned them the title of “Queens of Maskandi Music” in South Africa.
Both Imithente and Izingane Zoma continue to inspire the next generation by teaching Zulu culture and traditions to young people, ensuring that the legacy of Maskandi music lives on. This event is not just a celebration of music but a tribute to the enduring spirit of South Africa’s cultural heritage.
