BABALWA MENTJIES is an accomplished Jazz Vocalist, residing in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. She is a polished songwriter and a great vocal coach/entertainer, a University of KwaZulu Natal: School of Music graduate majored in Jazz Performance and also holds Postgraduate qualification in Marketing Management. She is a Music Educator & a Project Manager at IMAD (Institute for Music and Indigenous Arts Development) and is passionate about community development.
She is a Founder Member of Amathunzi Arts & Development Centre whereby they utilize all art forms (such as Music, Theatre productions, Dance, Storytelling etc.) to educate and create awareness about the social ills that are experienced in various communities. She works in partnership with The Institute for Music and Indigenous Arts Development, Sibongile Day and Night Care Centre, Immunopedia and Ukukhanya Arts Project.
Babalwa is currently performing with maestro George Werner (Pianist) who is a Founder Member of IMAD/The Little Giants Band and has shared the stage with many of South Africa’s top jazz musicians, including Feya Faku, Marcus Wyatt, Diana Ferrus, Melissa van der Spuy, Schalk Joubert, Amanda Strydom, Gloria Bosman, Neil Gonsalves, Sazi Dlamini, Blackie Tempi, Khaya Mahlangu and has performed around South Africa and abroad.
Babalwa Mentjies, is a versatile and highly experienced jazz vocalist. She is sure to captivate any audience with her soulful, rich, powerful voice and impeccable stage presence.
