The Odeion String Quartet presents Emperor’s Elegy

13 August @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

R50 – R120

The Odeion String Quartet invites you to an evening of profound musical exploration with their concert titled “Emperor’s Elegy” on the 13th of August at 19:00, hosted at the illustrious Odeion Auditorium.

The evening’s programme promises a compelling juxtaposition of two contrasting yet equally enthralling masterpieces: Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 and Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet “Emperor.”

Dmitri Shostakovich – String Quartet No. 8

Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8, often regarded as one of his most poignant and autobiographical works, was composed in 1960 and is dedicated to “the victims of fascism and war.” This piece, known for its hauntingly beautiful melodies and profound emotional depth, provides a powerful reflection on the struggles and sorrows of its time. The Odeion String Quartet’s interpretation will undoubtedly bring out the raw emotional intensity and nuanced subtleties that make this quartet a cornerstone of 20th-century chamber music.

Joseph Haydn – String Quartet in C Major, Op. 76, No. 3, “Emperor”

In contrast, the concert will also feature Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major, Op. 76, No. 3, famously known as the “Emperor” quartet. Composed in 1797, this work is celebrated for its majestic and lyrical qualities, particularly the second movement which features a theme that later became the national anthem of Austria and Germany. Haydn’s quartet offers a delightful balance of elegance and sophistication, showcasing the timeless beauty of classical music.

Join the Odeion String Quartet for this unique musical journey through the evocative landscapes of Shostakovich’s wartime reflection and Haydn’s regal elegance. This performance is a must-see for classical music enthusiasts and those looking to experience the profound emotional range and technical mastery of these two iconic composers.
