In Conversation with Phinda

After ten years away from the spotlight, Phinda is ready to reclaim her place in South Africa’s music scene with her highly anticipated EP, 10 Years – A Decade. This deeply personal project will be launched on 28 February 2025 at the iconic Market Theatre in Johannesburg, marking not just a musical return but a celebration of resilience, love, and healing.

For Phinda, this comeback is more than just releasing new music—it’s about growth and self-discovery. “It was a very emotional awakening,” she shares. “I made a firm decision not to repeat the mistakes of the past decade, especially the self-doubt that led me to abandon two previous attempts.”

Her children played a crucial role in guiding her through this journey. “They were instrumental in both the channeling and the healing. They are a true blessing,” she reflects.

The EP is a tapestry of emotions, blending Afro-jazz, soul, and traditional South African sounds. Each track tells a story, drawn from her personal experiences and the world around her. Uweyo is particularly poignant. “It came to me in my dreams after a prayer. It simply says: leave it in God’s hands.” Meanwhile, Abdiyi Ndawo speaks to resilience and the commitment to marriage vows, and Ngabuyaqal is a cheeky, lighthearted take on infidelity. Umntwan’ Omuntu is a wedding song inspired by her late mother-in-law, and Indlala eGoli paints a sobering picture of the struggles migrants face in Johannesburg. “Not all who come find gold. Sadly.”

With the EP’s release, Phinda is feeling a mix of emotions. “I’m proud, fearful, hopeful, and anxious all at once. Releasing music always brings that worry about how people will receive it.”

The Market Theatre holds special significance for her. “It feels like I’ve come full circle. My husband was right there in front of the stage during my last performance, cheering me on and helping with the flow of the show. To be doing this commemoration of his ten-year passing there—it’s perfect.”

Despite her time away, Phinda remains grateful for her loyal fan base. “I’m very lucky. Few of us in the industry get that kind of unwavering support. I pray they find value in this project, and I hope to widen the circle.”

Her commitment to preserving and refreshing South Africa’s musical heritage is clear. “This is the music I grew up with, and it’s always been my dream to ensure it doesn’t disappear. I also want to keep it fresh so it appeals to younger generations.”

Through it all, music has been her sanctuary. “More than anything, music has always been a balm for the soul. I can only thank God for choosing me to be in this space.”

The message behind 10 Years – A Decade is simple yet profound. “Life is meant to be lived and celebrated. Trust God with your dreams and aspirations. Find healing in laughter.”

Phinda’s return to the stage promises to be unforgettable, and she has a few surprises in store. “Some lifelong friends will be joining me—people who were there through the tears. One of them is Lily Flower, an amazing young woman new to the industry, currently working on a breathtaking album. Then there’s Bheki Nqoko—an incredible singer, composer, and producer, loved across the country for his vocals. And of course, Maxhoba! He needs no introduction. He’s in the country, and I had no intention of letting him pass without a song or two!”

Phinda’s comeback is more than just a performance—it’s a testament to the power of music to heal, inspire, and bring people together. This is one show not to be missed.
