A Night of Reggae Magic with UB40 ft. Ali Campbell
Few bands can claim a catalogue as enduring and instantly recognisable as UB40‘s, and their performance at Sunbet Arena this past weekend demonstrated exactly why their music continues to resonate across generations.
The evening began with an energetic opening act from the South African band, Tidal Waves, whose set proved to be an inspired choice. Blending reggae, pop and contemporary African influences, the band quickly engaged the audience with tight musicianship and infectious grooves, getting the room ready for the moment we had all been waiting for.

When UB40 finally took to the stage, the response was immediate and electric. From the opening notes, the band’s signature sound built around a seamless combination of reggae bass lines, crisp percussion, vibrant brass arrangements and melodic keyboards filled the venue. What remains remarkable about UB40 is the effortless balance they strike between musical precision and relaxed performance. Their songs sound fresh, but still take you on a trip down memory lane.
The rhythm section formed the backbone of the evening, laying down the steady, hypnotic pulse that has defined UB40’s music for more than four decades. Vocally, the band remained strong throughout the performance and lead vocals from Ali Campbell carried warmth and character, while the backing harmonies provided depth and authenticity to many of the group’s best-loved hits. The setlist moved comfortably between chart-topping classics, such as Red Red Wine and deeper cuts, such as Many Rivers To Cross, and the audience simply could not resist singing along to classic favourites, like Kingston Town and The Way You Do The Things You Do, and transforming several moments into one unforgettable memory. Rather than relying solely on nostalgia, UB40 approached the material as living music, still capable of connecting with contemporary audiences.

By the end of the evening, UB40 had accomplished what great live bands consistently achieve: they transformed a collection of well-known songs into a shared musical experience. The concert was less about spectacle and more about musicianship, groove and connection. Supported by an impressive opening set from Tidal Wave, the evening celebrated the enduring power of reggae and the timeless appeal of songs that continue to bring people together.
UB40’s performance was a masterclass in musical consistency, showcasing the band’s trademark rhythms, strong vocal delivery and outstanding instrumental interplay. Combined with Tidal Wave’s engaging opening performance, the concert offered an evening of memorable music that left the audience both satisfied and wanting more.
