Bokani Dyer’s In Conversation With Zoë Modiga

Award winning artist Bokani Dyer continues his “In Conversation With…” series with an illuminating and unmissable conversation with musician, songwriter and performer Zoë Modiga. In what turned out to be one of the most special conversations in the series so far, Dyer brought out the story behind Modiga’s multidimensional artist gift – Modiga herself got to ask some questions about Dyer’s creative process too.

“I was curious to know from Zoë her offstage preparation “ said Dyer “she just has the full package, of the whole image, the way she dresses, she’s an amazing performer… It was also a back and forth, we spoke about my experiences and the new album.”

Dyer’s conversation with Modiga is the third of a series that began with a conversation with The Brother Moves On’s Siya Mthembu, followed by Jazz pianist Thandi Ntuli

As he reveals in his first conversation with The Brother Moves On’s Siya Mthembu, the prompt for Bokani to engage in these short but illuminating conversations was watching a Nina Simone documentary where she said, “An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times”. Bokani locates his conversations in Johannesburg, the city where he recorded his 2023 album Radio Sechaba, where a new wave of jazz artists is creating and performing and which was one of 12 cities featured in the 2023 Unesco International Jazz Day on April 30th, themed “jazz journey around the world”.

The release of In Conversation With.. Zoë Modiga comes just days before Dyer plays in London where he premieres his recently released album, Radio Sechaba at The Jago in London on the 24th October.
Radio Sechaba was released on May 12th by Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings.
